Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about Billet — how listings work, how we handle data, and what to expect as a renter or landlord.
Why am I seeing unclaimed listings on Billet?
An unclaimed listing is a rental property we've added to Billet from public rental data sources. The property is real and currently being rented, but the owner hasn't joined Billet yet. You'll see these marked with a neutral “Listed nearby — unclaimed” badge on the listing card, and a banner on the listing detail page.
Why we do this: Billet is new, and we want renters near military bases to see real local inventory on day one. Showing unclaimed listings means you can gauge the market and start a shortlist even before every landlord has signed up here.
Where the data comes from: public rental data sources (third-party rental data aggregators that compile listings from MLS feeds, real estate marketing platforms, and public records). We don't redistribute photos or descriptions from those sources — those are added by the property owner once they claim the listing.
What happens when you inquire: your message is saved and held. The moment the owner of the property claims their listing on Billet, your message is forwarded to them and you'll be notified if you opted in. While you wait, we recommend similar listings with verified owners so you have an immediate path forward.
How do I report an inaccurate listing?
If something on a listing looks wrong — the address is incorrect, the property isn't actually for rent, photos are misrepresentative, or you're the owner and want it removed — use the “Report this listing” link on the listing detail page (or the inquiry form on unclaimed listings).
We review every report and remove or correct listings that shouldn't be live. Property owners can also claim the listing to take ownership and edit it directly (coming soon).
I'm the owner of an unclaimed listing — how do I claim it?
We're building a verified claim flow that lets property owners take ownership of their listing, see any inquiries renters have left, and add their own photos and description. The verification step ensures only the real owner can claim a property.
The claim flow isn't live yet. In the meantime, if you're a landlord, you can create a free listing and reach military renters today. If a listing for your property is already on Billet, sign up as a landlord and we'll notify you when the claim flow opens.
What does the BAH coverage badge mean?
Every listing on Billet shows whether the rent is covered by BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) at the nearest military base, and for which pay grades. For example, “Covers E-4 through O-2 at Fort Liberty” means BAH for pay grades E-4 through O-2 (with dependents, 2026 rates) is enough to cover the rent. We compute this from the official DoD BAH tables — no spreadsheets required.
What is the SCRA badge?
SCRA (Servicemembers Civil Relief Act) is a federal law that gives active-duty military tenants the right to break a lease early without penalty if they receive PCS orders or are deployed for 90+ days. Listings on Billet where the landlord has acknowledged SCRA show a green SCRA badge. Unclaimed listings don't show this badge because there's no landlord acknowledgment yet.
Is Billet free for renters and landlords?
Yes. Searching, inquiring, and listing on Billet is currently free. We'll introduce optional Pro tiers for landlords with multiple properties in the future, but free tier listings will always be available.
